Why Should I Hire A Licensed Plumber?

Before receiving a license, plumbers must prove their competence to a regulatory board, ensuring they meet code standards for safe plumbing. Just as professionals like doctors and pharmacists are required to meet certain qualifications to protect public health, plumbers, whose work impacts health and safety, must also be properly trained and licensed.

A licensed plumber guarantees not only expertise but accountability, with potential liability for mishaps if their work is done incorrectly. They’re also usually bonded or insured, providing added protection for homeowners.

While DIY plumbing might seem cost-effective, hiring a licensed plumber is often the safer choice, ensuring the work is done right and avoiding extra costs down the line.

Why Is There a Leak In My Shower/Bath?

Most shower leaks are caused by faulty grout or a damaged pan. To diagnose the issue, I first determine if the leak is constant or periodic. Constant leaks often indicate problems with pressurized water lines, while periodic leaks require further testing. I perform several checks including: filling the tub halfway to inspect the drain, blocking the shower drain and fill the pan to check for leaks, and capping the shower arm to test the pipe.

If these tests don’t identify the leak, I suspect water seeping through damaged grout or tiles. I cover the shower tile with a plastic drop cloth for a day to see if the leak stops. If not, it might require opening the walls for further inspection.

Why Doesn’t My Dishwasher Drain All The Way?

Dishwashers are designed to retain a small amount of water at the end of each cycle to prevent the heating element, which dries the dishes, from overheating. It functions similarly to a water heater element.

If you notice a significant amount of water remaining in the pump, it may indicate a clogged drain. A partially blocked air gap—the small chrome dome on the kitchen counter—can also cause this issue! You'll need a plumber to inspect the problem further to access the issue!

What Do I Do If I Think I Have a Leak?

Look for signs like unusual dust patterns or drips. If you see water, follow it to the source and shut off the nearest valve. If no water is visible, place a paper towel or newspaper in the area to catch any future drips, marking it with ink to spot water stains easily. Check nearby pipes and appliances for damage, then briefly turn on the water to see if a leak appears.

If there’s no immediate sign of water, monitor regularly for changes. Remember, leaks can be subtle, like sudden water bill increases, damp spots, or warm areas on floors. For any signs you can’t trace, contact a licensed plumber right away to address it professionally!
